Birding
There are more than 500 species of birds that live in Belize year round or visit Belize as part of their migration. Belize is excellent for birding because of its rich diversity of ecosystems containing forests, rivers, savanna and jungle. Trips along the Sittee River are great for seeing waterfowl, such as herons, kingfishers and jabiru storks. You may want to explore the natural waterways by canoe or kayak. It is a great way to enjoy bird watching and the flora and fauna. Cockscomb Wildlife Preserve is a spot to sight many parrots and other exotics.
Biking and Walking
Bicycling and walking are healthy, inexpensive, environmentally friendly ways of getting around, and provide a great opportunity to meet your neighbors. The maintained pathways on Anderson Point will offer a great place to start your morning. The streets of Hopkins are peaceful, attractive and relatively traffic free. We invite you to come and enjoy the beautiful, tropical sights and sounds of our communities. Hiking in the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Preserve will bring you hours of enjoyment.
Gardening
Gardening in the tropics can be a rich and rewarding activity. The variety of flora is almost limitless. We plan to start a community garden club once the community becomes more populated. We may have a community garden for all to enoy. It is a wonderful way to meet with friends and to share stories of your gardening successes (and failures), and learn new skills.
Diving and Snorkeling
Belize is one of the world's top dive destinations! Diving in Belize is quite the experience! It is a world of excitement and wonder in the lush Caribbean Sea. The Belize Barrier Reef System is more than 185 miles long, is the largest coral reef in the Western Hemisphere and is the longest unbroken barrier reef in the world. It is home to an astounding variety of coral reef formations including walls, pinnacles, spur and groove, and ‘swim throughs’.
Farther offshore are three enormous rings of coral known as atolls which provide hundreds of miles of additional diving opportunities. The closest of these is Glover’s Reef Atoll which rises to the surface from a depth of over 2,000 feet. Equally impressive is the Turneffe Atoll which also hosts an abundance of marine life as well as the world famous ‘Blue Hole’ which is situated at Lighthouse Atoll. At Turneffe Atoll several ocean currents converge at the extreme southern tip or the “elbow” of the atoll providing the opportunity to dive through enormous schools of permit, snappers, eagle rays, spadefish, grouper and jacks numbering at times in the thousands. The underwater world of Belize truly exceeds every other Caribbean dive destination in diversity, size and scope.
There are several locations to arrange for a diving trip right in the village, because diving from the beach front property in Belize is the BEST!. Hamanasi, a PADI 5 Star Gold Palm Resort, they will help give you of one Belize's best diving experiences with a personal service touch. Jaguar Reef also provides a wonder diving experience. Hopkins Underwater Adventures, right in the village, can help you with diving or snorkeling.
We have enjoyed snorkeling right off the shore of Anderson Point and Hopkins and seen some pretty amazing things. Horace Mann has a small tour company out of Sittee Village as well. However, for a look at some shallow coral reefs we have done some great snorkeling not far off our shore at South Water Caye. Our friends run a field study experience for many U.S. universities at Wee Wee Caye and we often snorkel around that tiny little island. Check out our pictures on Facebook (Anderson Point at Sarango Bight).
Fishing
Sport fishing enthusiasts have much to choose from in the Stann Creek District. In the waters of Anderson Lagoon and the Caribbean Sea, which separate Belize's mainland from the country's 185-mile long barrier reef, you can catch tarpon, snook, bonefish, permit, snapper, and jack. Anglers may book private charters, smaller boats or party boats year round. Prices vary depending on the type of fishing, number of passengers, size of boat and time of year. Hopkins is a fishing village and many local fishermen will arrange excursions for you. If you are interested in a chartered trip, there is more information available in the Living in Belize section of this site.
Kayaking and Canoeing
This is a unique form of sightseeing because you are able to witness the wonders of nature from a unique point of view. You can spot the ever-changing flora: plants, trees, blossoms and vines that thrive in the area. The natural marvels of life you will experience are momentous. On certain occasions, it is so quiet that you hear a fish jump for a hovering mosquito. There are many tranquil spots around Anderson Point, Sittee River Village, Hopkins and Silk Grass. Keep your eyes and ears open throughout your journey, as you will not want to miss a thing. Many will agree this is a great way to see the area.
